Welcome to NUS-USI
nus-usi conference 2013
This year, NUS-USI Conference returns to the Killyhevlin Hotel in the beautiful lake-land of Enniskillen.
Conference 2013 takes place on 23-24 April when delegates from Northern Ireland students’ unions have the opportunity to set the priorities for the years ahead.
Delegates will hear from inspirational speakers, including minister for employment and learning, Stephen Farry. They will take part in group activity, debate and form policy, and elect new leaders for 2013-14.
This annual democratic event is a great place to network with students and activists from across Northern Ireland.
The principal partner of conference is Endsleigh Insurance Services Ltd with support also from Tenancy Deposit Scheme, Randox Laboratories and Higher Education Academy.

nus-usi conference 2012 - a resounding success
It is agreed throughout the student movement that this year's conference was the biggest and best ever.
We were thrilled to welcome Stephen Farry, the Minister for employment and Learning who addressed conference and took time to answer probing questions from the conference floor before meeting briefly with the NUS-USI President.
Motions were debated at length and policy formed for the next five years: constitutional amendments were also passed leading to a constitutional signing of the new Trilateral Agreement between NUS, USI and NUS-USI. This will officially be signed at an event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of NUS-USI that will take place at the Long Gallery in Stormont on 24 May and will be addressed by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore.
We would like to congratulate Adrianne Peltz on her re-election to the positon of NUS-USI President for the coming year 2012-2013 and wish her the best of luck in continuing her work for students and student unions throughout Northern Ireland. Adam McGibbon from Queen's fought a tight campaign and for that we also congratulate him and wish him every success in the future.
Other positions that were filled included Thom Hinds, QUBSU for Further Education Union Development Officer; Rachel Wallace, QUB for LGBT, Sarah Wright, QUB for Education & Welfare; Matthew O'Hare, Environmental Awareness; Henry Adams, Equality and, last but not least, we are pleased to have last year's Deputy President, Justyn Mackay return to take on the role of Student Volunteering & Community Officer.

Defend EMA campaign launches

NUS-USI, the union for over 200,000 students in Northern Ireland, has launched the Defend EMA campaign.
Defend EMA seeks to build a coalition of further and higher education students and supporters to ensure that the most disadvantaged continue to receive support to stay in education past the age of 16.
NUS-USI believes that the EMA is a sound investment of public funds, ensuring that those students who are at the highest risk of ending up in the dole queue have the opportunity to reach their potential by staying in education.
The EMA provides much-needed cash for those students from the most deprived backgrounds to enable them to stay in school or college beyond the age of 16. EMA pays for travel, for lunch and for books and materials. It enables those students to work fewer hours in part-time jobs, allowing them to focus on their studies.
It is crucial that students have their say as EMA comes under review in Northern Ireland during 2012. The Defend EMA campaign will ensure the student voice is heard through conducting independent research, keeping students and the public up to date on political developments and coordinating actions to ensure that Assembly members are made fully aware of the importance of EMA.
Adrianne Peltz, President of NUS-USI, said, ‘EMA ensures the most disadvantaged have an equal chance at education. I urge students, parents, the public and Assembly members to support the NUS-USI Defend EMA campaign.’
To be kept up to date with developments as the EMA review process goes forward register with the Defend EMA campaign.
